The Economics of Colour: A Commemorative Tour

PRESS CONFERENCE FACILITATED BY DIANE ABBOT MP TO BE HELD ON 20/08/07 PORTCULLIS HOUSE BRIDGE STREET, WESTMINSTER, SW1A 2LW
3pm-4.30pm

The Rev Jesse Jackson on a platform with Lee Jasper, Diane Abbot and Karen Chouhan will join the 1990 Trust and Operation Black Vote on a five day, nine city UK tour to launch the 1990 Trust’s new initiative Equanomics UK in a commemorative tour.

2007 marks the 200th year since the abolition of the Trans Atlantic trade in African people. The tour will also signify the importance of the economic contributions made by Black and minority ethnic people, who were pivotal to the industrialisation and the making of modern Britain. The tour will visit Bristol, London, Birmingham, Leicester, Nottingham, Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield and Bradford.

Equanomics UK is an ambitious attempt to address issues of poverty that exists and will focus its efforts on issues such as wage inequalities, international trade policies, the impact of credit, loans and debt, and the impact of poverty on social conditions such as education, employment, health and housing.

The Reverend will focus on 3 key areas:

  1. To commemorate the abolition of the Trans Atlantic trade in African people
  2. To launch Equanomics UK
  3. To highlight the current position of Britains minority communities in all social policy areas and the need for economic empowerment for the disadvantaged.

Karen Chouhan, Director of Equanomics says:

“Equanomics UK will offer a completely different approach to tackling issues of inequalities in Britain. We will work with top level partners across the regions of the UK to ensure that as we build the Equanomics UK coalition we organise as a social movement to achieve our desired aim of reducing poverty and enabling a better quality of life for impoverished and socially excluded communities. I look forward to a day when economic analysis becomes a pre-requisite to shaping national polices”.

The press conference will run from 3pm to 4.30pm. From 3.35pm to 4.30pm select individual interviews can be arranged with the Reverend between these times.
